Motorhome storage

How to ensure a good storage location for your motorhome

The storage location of your motorhome can greatly affect the price you pay for motorhome insurance and as such it is important you choose carefully not only where you store your motorhome, but also the security at that storage location.

The postcode of your storage location is a major 'rating factor' when getting a motorhome insurance quote from Caravan Guard. This means that different postcodes will have a higher or lower rating dependent on the level of risk assigned to them by our underwriters RSA (Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc). Rating by storage postcode is standard practice for motor insurers. City Centre postcodes will generally be higher risk than more rural areas, but also certain towns and cities may rate higher than others due to the volume and type of claims experienced there by that insurer.

However, the postcode of the storage location, whether it is your own house or a specific motorhome storage facility, is not the only thing that can affect your insurance premium - storage security is also a big factor.

Storing your motorhome at home or at another residential property

If you are storing your motorhome at home or at a friend's or relative's house, then keeping it behind 24 hour locked gates or a secure drivepost will make your motorhome more difficult to steal and will qualify you for up to 6.5% motorhome insurance discount. If your motorhome can fit inside a locked garage it will again qualify for this discount. Security lighting is also a good deterrent to would be motorhome thieves.

We acknowledge that some motorhome owners do not have access to off road parking. On road parking does however, create additional risks and therefore will incur a higher insurance premium. For new customers we do not accept on road storage of motorhomes valued over £20,000 and may not accept on road storage at all for certain storage postcodes.

Storing your motorhome at a storage site

If you are placing your motorhome into storage whilst not in use, look for a storage site which has security measures such as perimeter fencing, 24 hour access control and CCTV in place. The CaSSOA 'Gold' or 'Silver' awarded storage sites will generally have most of these measures in place. There are some storage sites which aren't CaSSOA approved, but providing they have the aforementioned security measures in place, they can still be considered secure. Our up to 6.5% motorhome insurance storage discount again applies for using a secure storage site but the site will need to have at least perimeter fencing and 24 hour access control.

Of course, no matter how good the security at your storage location is, thefts do unfortunately happen, and it's for this reason that Caravan Guard encourage owners to fit good quality security to the motorhome itself. Visit our motorhome security page for more details.
