Thinking of buying a new car, but want something comfortable and practical for towing your touring caravan?

Practical Caravan magazine joined forces with What Car? and The Camping & Caravanning Club to put 50 cars through their paces and establish which was the best towcar for 2007.

The cars came from 25 manufacturers and were assessed in classes according to their weight.

The winners of each class were:

• the VW Golf 1.9 TDI Match
• the Volvo V70 D5 SE
• the VW Passat 2.0 TDI Sport 4Motion Estate
• the Audi A6 Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro Tiptronic
• and the Landrover Discovery TDV6 HSE Auto

There could only be one overall winner, though, and that was the medium-weight VW Passat which was the only car to score 5 out of 5 for towing performance.
