If you want the most possible space for your pounds, you simply can’t beat a trailer tent. And here’s a classic example. It comes from France’s Cabanon, a manufacturer with a long history – fast approaching 70 years, in fact – in tents and trailer tents. Indeed, it has canvas in its considerable pedigree.
Unsurprisingly for a trailer tent, the Malawi’s dimensions when packed are seriously compact – which means optimal manoeuvrability, fuel economy when towing, and easy storage (it can even go in your garage). Its light weight also means virtually any car can tow it – and that includes those with electric powertrains.
Cabanon uses an Al-Ko galvanised steel chassis and the trailer unit has a Plastisol treatment to give all-weather protection.
Heavy-duty cotton canvas is stitched by trained professionals working at its main base near Dunkirk. The Malawi Delixe trailer tent also boasts not just large windows, complete with zip-down curtains, but also clear roof panels for extra daylight and night time star gazing, with PVC groundsheets to the living and awning areas. Overhead, it’s an acrylic-coated polyester roof fabric.
Cabanon says it typically takes a couple around an hour to fully pitch a Malawi trailer tent. Once erected, living dimensions are some 4.90m x 4.40m – including an awning and bedroom area that’s considerably more than a typical touring caravan – with standing height a maximum of 2.30m. There are choices of two canopies and/or annexes from a short list of optional extras.
This Cabanon Malawi 2.0 trailer tent come with a Deluxe kitchen, which detaches from the trailer and is free-standing for use wherever you want it – inside or out (something to consider when you order your gas hose). It comprises a three-burner gas hob, sink and storage space.
As standard, the Malawi trailer tent sleeps two people on a double bed with a slatted base and a decent quality mattress that’s off floor level. It’s a generous 2.20m x 1.45m. This area also benefits from blackout cotton fabric to keep out unwanted stray light. The hinged bed base also lifts up to reveal a large storage area. You can also add an annexe to sleep two more.
There’s not much in terms of security, but if you invest in a wheel clamp or similar, they will be sufficient as a visual deterrent. Other than that, you’re good to go!
