Does the UK van conversion sector need another marque? Well, if it can bring to the party something like this, the answer simply has to be in the positive. Slovenia’s Megamobil certainly seems to think it sees opportunities – and its Revolution 640 model here really does offer something different to more established rivals, of which it’s not short.
As you can see in the alternative list below, the Revolution doesn’t want for competition, many of them brands already have a strong foothold in the UK. However, although there’s a mix of rear lounge or rising bed models, none can currently supply what Megamobil is offering – a combination of rear lounge and drop-down bed that would seem to give the best of two worlds for those that previously have had to favour one or the other.
We’re also in the realms of a bespoke service here. There’s a full choice of wood-style colours when it comes top furniture trims, worktops and flooring, as well as some 30 upholsteries and seven alternatives to the initial white exterior paintwork. To further prove the point, the example here that was brought to the UK as an early demonstrator boasts over £17,500 of factory-fitted options.
As ever, it’s the options packs that offer best value. Top two are likely to be the Autonomous Driving Package (lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, electric parking brake and more) and the City Package (which includes a digital rear view mirror with 8.9in display, 10in touchscreen with DAB radio and sat-nav etc, 360-degree parking system, automatic climate control, cornering lights etc). There’s lots more of interest, too – not least the £1,602 Clesana waterless toilet!
Starting point is Fiat’s extra-long (6.40m) Ducato van (Peugeot’s Boxer is also offered) with the most powerful 180bhp engine option. One thing you might notice when you get to the test drive stage is how quiet it seems out on the road – you’ve got some heavy-duty floor, wall and ceiling insulation to thank for that.
It’s also the high-roof version of the Ducato. One advantage of this is Megamobil can offer that bit more storage than most, too, including a large overcab locker in lieu of the usual sunroof and side storage offered by most converters. Standing room is particularly high, too. And at the back you can create a huge storage area when needed.
And a bonus of using the extra-long base vehicle is occupants of the rear bed can sleep lengthways on the electrically operated drop-down double that measures some 1.91 x 1.78m, complete with memory foam mattresses. There’s also the option to create another double bed from the rear seating.
Nobody’s calling the Megamobil Mega Revolution 640 campervan a five-berth, but you could feasibly make a 1.85m x 0.90m single from the front seating. Here, in daytime mode, there’s a typical forward-facing double seat and swivelled cab chairs around a side-fixing table with swing-out extension.
Kitchen facilities are restricted to a two-burner hob and sink combination in stainless steel, and a 90-litre compressor fridge.
There’s a pull-out worktop extension and storage includes a selection of drawers.
For the washroom, a tambour door slides back to reveal a raised swivel-bowl toilet. There’s also a secondary door that swings around when you want to create a shower cubicle served by a shower on a riser bar, albeit there’s just the one plughole below.
The Megamobil Mega Revolution 640 campervan has all the trappings of excellent build quality and attention to detail. And, with a floorplan that offers more, it could be that Megamobil emerges as a viable contender in the van conversion sector.
