2025 marks three amazing decades since Caravan Guard first began insuring touring caravans in the summer of 1995. And what a journey it’s been!
We’ve grown from a small family-run team operating out of a tiny Halifax office to one of the UK’s leading leisure vehicle insurance specialists – protecting touring caravans, motorhomes, campervans, and static caravans across the country.
Our journey – from 1995 to now
We began in 1995 as a division of Wilby Insurance Brokers, offering touring caravan insurance from a small office on Clare Road in Halifax.
Fast forward 30 years, and we now operate from our own purpose-renovated headquarters and are proud to continue to be a family-run business, still based in Halifax and still passionate about delivering great service and specialist cover.
From launching our first website in the 90s (back when caravanguard.co.uk was a novelty!) to pioneering online quote and buy services, we’ve embraced change and innovation while staying true to our values – positive people, brilliant customer experiences, care completely, do the right thing, and serious fun.
Key milestones over the years include:
- 1995: Caravan Guard launches as a division of Wilby Insurance Brokers by founding chairman Peter Wilby and wife Nora.
- 2001: We became a Limited company
- 2003: Motorhome insurance is added to our products
- 2005: The Leisuredays brand is introduced for static caravan insurance

- 2008: We move into our very own building, Caxton House, opened by Peter Draper, then Chairman of the National Caravan Council (NCC)
- 2014: Peter’s son, Ryan Wilby, takes over as Managing Director
- 2020: We hit 100,000 customers during the staycation boom
- 2025: We reach a new milestone – 125,000 customers insured
Proud to be award-winning
Over the years, we’ve been proud to receive many prestigious accolades – including wins and recognition at the British Insurance Awards and Insurance Times Awards.
Most recently, we’ve been voted as Best Caravan Cover Provider and Best Motorhome Insurance Provider at the Insurance Choice Awards – voted by our wonderful customers – as well as selected Best Motorhome Insurance Prover and Best Campervan Insurance Provider, multiple times by What Motorhome magazine.

Giving back
We’ve always believed in giving back. Over the years, our fundraising efforts have supported charities including our local hospice, Overgate Hospice, and Heart Research UK, as well as sponsoring Paralympian Hannah Cockroft CBE, and more. In 2025, we proudly committed to fund five rooms in Overgate’s new inpatient unit, as part of their Big Build Appeal.
Our Paperless Policies campaign has also raised more than £210,000 for Heart Research UK – just one example of how our customers help make a difference.

Celebrating in true Caravan Guard style
We recently brought the whole team together outside our Halifax HQ for a special 30th anniversary photoshoot. Wearing Caravan Guard colours and standing proudly alongside giant “30 YEARS” letters, we raised a toast with cupcakes, fizz, pizza and plenty of smiles!
It was a chance to reflect on the journey so far, recognise our people, and look ahead to an exciting future as we continue to insure the freedom of the next generation of caravanners and motorhomers.
