If you don’t look after your car and caravan tyres you run the risk of a blowout and potential road accident.
As October marks Tyre Safety Month from road safety campaigner TyreSafe, we bring you our guide to tyre pressure monitors for your caravan or motorhome. Plus we’ve teamed up with Fit2Go to give away two of their award-winning Michelin Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems – one for a caravanner and one for a motorhome or campervan owner.
The Michelin TPMS is wireless, so it’s easy to install and use. It comes with four TPMS sensors as standard, with four extra sensors so motorists can monitor both tow car and caravan or trailer.
The display screen is solar-powered and displays the exact tyre pressures in bar or PSI. The ‘plug and play’ technology provides early low-pressure warnings via a flashing light on the screen every 20 seconds if a tyre becomes under-inflated by 15 per cent. An audible alert is added when the pressure either drops by 25 per cent or should the tyre be over-inflated by 35 per cent or more. For fast leakage, lights flash and a beeping alarm alert the driver to pull over.
The system also allows the driver to check all tyre pressures at the press of a button – without needing to get out of the vehicle. Plus, it includes an overnight mode, which informs the driver of a low-pressure tyre before they set off on a journey.
This tyre pressure monitoring system was the recent winner of the “Best Accessory” at Practical Caravan’s Tourer of the Year Awards 2020, which celebrates innovative products that make touring life easier.
Did you know…Research by Michelin has shown that 60 per cent of UK motorists* regularly drive on under-inflated tyres, half of which are dangerously under-inflated by more than eight PSI. Tyre under-inflation increases fuel bills, CO2 emissions and stopping distances, makes a vehicle’s steering less precise and leads to a higher risk of aquaplaning. It also reduces a tyre’s endurance capabilities, increasing tread wear and making it more prone to damage and possible rapid deflation.
