It’s not easy to compile a list of the best-selling motorhome models of 2007 as many sales figures for individual models are not readily available.
So, the next best thing is to ask each of the major manufacturers to tell us their best seller for the year to compile our own list.
Where we can, we’ll include details of exactly how many models were sold – but any model selling over 50 units per season can be counted as a true best seller.
Manufacturers and their best selling models in 2007 were:
Adria Van Twin
Adria – Best Seller: Van Twin:
Adria’s idea of converting Fiat’s long-wheelbase high-top Ducato van, and managing to squeeze in a permanent bed that’s 6ft 5in long – and that hinges out of the way to open up valuable daytime space – has proved to be a masterstroke of innovative design. The Twin accounted for 35% of sales of what is one of the UK’s most popular imported marques.
Autocruise Starburst
Autocruise – Best Seller: Starburst:
The Starburst’s success lays as much in its attention to detail as its layout, which provides long beds/seats coupled with an end washroom in a compact 6.37m-long bodyshell. It accounted for 15% of the then-independent Autocruises’s sales. Autocruise is now part of the Swift Group.
Auto-Sleeper Symbol
Auto-Sleeper – Best Seller: Symbol:
The company say its Symbol was its biggest seller ‘by a country mile’. The main improvement the new model had over the older model was its greater interior space, although the superior drive of the latest Peugeot Boxer base vehicle should not be discounted either.
Bilbo Celex
Bilbo’s – Best Seller: Celex
Produced in long and short-wheelbase variants, the Celex sums up everything that Bilbo do best – bespoke conversions of Volkswagen’s Transporter.
Burstner – Best Seller: Argos A747-2/A748-2:
Burstner Argos A747-2 & A748-2
There are two versions of this tag axle model – the 748 has an L-shaped settee in its lounge while the 747 goes for a double dinette. The Argos was launched in February 2007, with first deliveries going out in June. Sales had almost reached 150 by the end of the season though.
Ci Carioca 656
Ci – Best Seller: Carioca 656:
This family van accounted for nearly a third of this popular range’s sales last year. It’s popular with hire fleets, too, where multi-berth, competitively priced motorhomes that can withstand the odd careless knock are always in demand.
Elddis Autoquest 115
Elddis – Best Seller: Autoquest 115:
Explorer Group say that the Elddis Autoquest 140 was its single best-selling motorhome for the 2007 season. It, and the Compass Avantgarde 115, which is the same vehicle but different badge and upholstery and also made by Explorer Group, accounted for 16% of the manufacturer’s output in 2007.
Hymer Van 522
Hymer – Best Seller: Van 522:
Based on Ford’s Transit, the Van 522 has enough living space to offer a permanent transverse rear double bed over a garage storage area.
Knaus – Best Seller: Van TI 550:
Knaus Van TI 550
The Van TI 550 features a fixed, transverse rear bed over a garage, with a clever double-door arrangement for the washroom and an overall colour scheme that dares to be different.
Romahome – Best Seller: Outlook:
Romahome Outlook
At less than 5m long the go-anywhere Outlook has repeatedly proved itself as being a practical camper that’s still up to the more mundane tasks in life such as supermarket parking. A total of 80 were ordered during the 2007 season.
Swift – Best Seller: Bolero 680 FB:
Swift Bolero 680 FB
This model boasts a class-leading design, well-resolved layout details and excellent price/specification. One in five of all Swift Group models sold in 2007 was one of these – with the Swift Sundance 630L and Ace Milano running as close seconds.
Trigano Tribute 650
Trigano – Best Seller: Tribute 650:
Squeezing a 150-litre/freezer into a van conversion is just one of the reasons put forward for the success of the Tribute 650, which propelled it to some 200 registrations in 2007. That, and its starting price of under £30,000
