Lithium leisure batteries continue to spark debate among motorhomers and campervan owners and your responses to our recent poll show just how popular this technology is becoming.
In last month’s community poll we asked whether owners are already using lithium, sticking with traditional lead-acid batteries, or thinking about switching.
After 475 votes from motorhomers and campervanners we can now bring you the results, with more than half telling us that they use lithium leisure batteries.

A third said they don’t use lithium and 10 percent said they were considering switching. The results show that almost six in 10 motorhome owners in our poll are already using lithium leisure batteries.
Alongside the votes, you left dozens of insightful comments. Here’s a round-up of what owners had to say…
Safety and the importance of a battery management system
Alan, a professional engineer in the lithium sector, offered a detailed explanation of why a proper battery management system (BMS) is essential: “The battery MUST have a BMS that monitors internal temperature and voltage and controls charging at the individual cell level. Never fit a Li-Ion battery not certified for its intended use.”
A useful reminder that while lithium can be incredibly effective, it’s important to choose the right technology and make sure it’s properly installed.
Several readers highlighted the difference between traditional lithium-ion cells and LiFePO4 leisure batteries, which are increasingly used in motorhomes.
Steven reminded readers that “LiFePO4 is much safer… and prices are dropping to the point where they’re on par with lead-acid.”
Compatibility matters
Not everyone can simply “drop in” a lithium battery. Tony shared how research saved him from a costly mistake: “My solar panels and converter are not compatible, so it’s not a straight-forward swap.”
And he’s not alone — many owners pointed out the need to update chargers, solar controllers, and sometimes wiring.
Off-grid freedom
If there’s one thing lithium fans agree on, it’s performance off-grid.
Garry, who full-times in his van, said his KS Energy batteries have “totally transformed our living… from March to October without using EHU at all.”
Doug built his own 230Ah LiFePO4 setup and now camps “pretty much indefinitely… even with a compressor fridge.”
And Vince summed up the upgrade perfectly: “We gained three times the usable capacity in the same footprint.”
Owners praised fast charging, deeper discharge levels, Bluetooth monitoring, and huge weight savings.
Longer storage and cold-weather use
Jonathan highlighted the benefits of choosing a lithium battery with built-in heating for safe charging in freezing temperatures. And Chris highlighted how much lighter lithium is when taking the battery out for winter: “Less back ache!”
Cost considerations
While many praised lithium, others still question the price.
Mark, who installs lithium systems, said they’re “excellent when using an inverter” but admits cost is a barrier.
Steve W agreed, saying lithium is great for off-grid touring but “a waste of money” if you always stay on electric hook-up.
Is lithium the future?
Based on our poll, most motorhome and campervan owners who’ve switched to LiFePO4 leisure batteries enjoy the performance boost — especially those who love off-grid touring. But it’s clear that compatibility checks, safety certification, and installation quality are essential.
Whether you’re already using lithium, leisure batteries, thinking about upgrading, or sticking with your tried-and-tested lead-acid setup, keep the comments coming. Your experiences help other campervan and motorhome owners make informed choices.
