You can often tell how successful a certain range has been by the increasing number of variants offered. In the case of the coachbuilt Matrix Supreme motorhome line-up from Adria, there are already half a dozen Fiat-based models, with – in a distinct move upmarket – two additions for 2023 being based on Mercedes cabs and Al-Ko chassis. Here’s one, the MB 670 SL.
Moving up to a Merc’
In Adria-speak, Supreme tells us it’s the top trim level and 670 SL means the floorplan features twin rear single beds set over a garage. Matrix denotes a drop-down bed over the lounge at the front. And MB, you’ve guessed, stands for Mercedes-Benz.
It means paying a premium, of course. Prices start at £110,565, but that’s before you get drawn into a highly enticing options list that includes base vehicle, engine and transmission enhancements along with lots of extra individual items of kit.
The heavier-duty Mercedes 417 chassis-cab with 170bhp engine and automatic transmission won’t escape your notice, even though it adds over £5,000 to the bottom line. Ditto for the £7,000-plus Mercedes-Benz Luxury Pack, covering the kind of kit – 10.25in screen for a highly sophisticated infotainment system, automatic air conditioning, extra sound insulation and lots more – that turns a commercial vehicle into a luxury cab befitting of an upmarket motorhome.
Even as standard, though, the Adria Matrix Supreme MB 670 SL motorhome is all rather stylish and certainly has the feel of an expensive vehicle.
That’s not just down to the Mercedes side of things, either. Silver bodywork, double-floor construction, flush-fitting windows, aluminium lower side skirts and a large garage with an impressive 400kg load allowance all add to the appeal.
You’ll have noticed, like many imports, the habitation door stays on the UK offside. It’s also a bit wider than many, making for easier access. There’s also an electric step.
Inside the Matrix Supreme MB 670 SL motorhome, you’re greeted with a modern take on an established layout – front lounge, central kitchen and washroom, rear area that sees permanent single beds set high over the garage.
An infill means you can instantly create a double from the singles.
Plus, if you want to accommodate two more, there’s an electrically-operated drop-down double directly over the lounge.
The lounge itself comprises seating (including the cab seats swivelled) around a fixed pedestal leg table with manual height and fore-and-aft adjustment.
Despite the bed overhead and the lack of an offside window, good levels of daylight get in here thanks to the extra-large, opening cab sunroof, plus the nearside and habitation door windows. As well as good ventilation, this Adria scores with its Alde central heating and hot water system.
Aft of the lounge, the kitchen has the usual (for Adria), space-saving three gas burners in-line hob, plus a separate square sink – all in a matching stainless steel finish – complemented by a 142-litre fridge with freezer. You also get a Thetford Duplex grill/oven combination, extractor unit, splash panel and three soft-closing drawers, the only compromise here being worktop space.
The 670 SL’s washroom facilities are split between a lined shower cubicle on the offside and, directly across the corridor, a toilet room. The former includes a water-efficient shower on a riser bar, drop-down hanging rail, large rooflight and twin plugholes. It’s on the wheel arch, but the moulding takes this into account and it could actually be a help when showering as there’s somewhere to place your feet when you want to clean them.
The toilet room has a Thetford swivel-bowl loo and an oval-esque, countertop handbasin that actually twists around as needed. Its solid door, along with a sliding panel, mean you can create a full-width washroom, giving you lots of dressing room space.
Locker storage (upper and lower) is good here, too, with large lockers under the basin and over the toilet, plus high-level open shelving.
There’s a lot of clever stuff going on throughout this Adria Matrix Supreme MB 670 SL motorhome. Everything from the reading lights and USB sockets on rails to the Media Wall, capable of housing anything up to a 32in TV, to the Adria Media Controller for streaming music etc, and the Adria Mach app that lets you operate heating, lighting and more via your phone or other device.
