When I’m in the Lakes fishing I always use a tarp with an awning pole & couple of telescopic poles then guy either side of the pop up roof. I’m usually on my own on these trips. When my wife comes along we normally use a drive away awning. I prefer the tarp, myself. Mine is an Army surplus basha – waterproof & good coverage for less than £20….

We have a wind out Fiamma awning (with storm straps), we also have a porch awning which allows us to spill out and protect us from weather, the one problem with these awnings is wind. The porch awning is pretty durable in a storm (although we did take it down over storm Bella at Christmas!), but not the wind out Fiamma (similar to the first two above). I’ve seen the side of a van ripped off with wind blowing the awning, so suggest you never leave it out whilst unattended!
We find both of these ideal. We also take a small beach shelter to pitch beside the van which will house a bike and wet clothes, muddy boots etc (£20 from Lidl!)

Very informative – especially if your van does not have a built-in rail like our first van – we found the pop-up gazebo type easiest to use. Thanks!
