Touring caravan manufacturer, Bailey of Bristol introduces its new range of touring caravans, the seven model Pegasus range, reports Liz King.
Elegant, practical, comfortable, stylish and sexy; the much anticipated six single axle models and one twin axle were unveiled to the Bailey dealer network, the caravan media and other selected guests from the caravan industry in an atmosphere that was positively buzzing with excitement.
Basic caravan design has not changed for decades, but the specially selected design team at Bailey, Team Pegasus, has worked covertly for two years under the leadership of company managing director Nick Howard, to make ground-breaking changes to caravan design and construction. The brief was simple; to develop a construction system that is more weatherproof, more durable, more aerodynamic and inherently more stable but without a weight penalty.
Alu-Tech
Pegasus is the first UK built caravan to incorporate the new design, high performance Bailey developed Alu-Tech body shell, an interlocking aluminium external framework that clamps the body panels together and produces a shell much stronger than in traditional caravan construction.
This construction method has reduced the number of panels from nine down to five, reducing the number of joints and fixing points by 90% thus reducing the number of potential entry points for water ingress.
No timber has been used in the upper body shell either, which features a composite plastic internal shell, which not only gives Pegasus some “green” credentials, but also helps limit water damage.
Pegasus comes with a ten year body shell integrity guarantee, (terms and conditions apply). It is also the only UK caravan to offer Grade 3 classification of Thermal Insulation EN 1645-1 with thicker body shell panels, (37mm) superior grade polystyrene and extra insulation to pipe runs and wheel boxes. This will keep you warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
The aerodynamic profile, we can report in the model we tested, helped improve fuel economy too, by a staggering 10%.

Advances in design are not limited to the exterior either, with the flat panel roof construction giving 6ft 5ins (1.96m) headroom along the length of the caravan, which makes Pegasus feel very spacious, and new design gas-strut assisted lift up front bed bases make for easier access to the capacious storage space. If you fancy putting your feet up and enjoying the new freestanding home entertainment system that includes a 15″ flat screen TV and DVD player, then nothing is easier than pulling out the dual purpose slide-out units that act as footrests by day and strong easy-to-operate bed bases at night, without the vulnerable leader board. There are three soft furnishing options, a new style sink and new style four burner gas hob, and floating Italian sourced overhead lockers.
Security includes an AL-KO Secure portable wheel lock, alarm and TRACKER monitor Stolen Vehicle Recovery System. Also included is AL-KO’s ATC anti-snaking device. With all these devices attracting generous caravan insurance discounts from Caravan Guard, owners of the Pegasus can look forward to cheap caravan insurance premiums.

Leading third party authorities have worked alongside Bailey in the extensive validation programme and rigorous testing procedures.
Pegasus will sit in the company’s portfolio alongside the Ranger, Ranger GT, Pageant and Senator model ranges to which there will be no changes for the 2010 season.
Recommended retail prices including VAT at 15% start at £14,995 for the two-berth Pegasus 462 to £17,295 for the six-berth twin axle Pegasus 624.
