Caravan Guard have seen a 43% decrease in the frequency of motorhome insurance claims involving low bridges, since launching a free motorhome height sticker initiative to help motorhomers avoid damage in 2009. Because of their success the stickers are being relaunched for 2011.
We saw a six fold increase in claims for accidents of this sort between 2005 and 2008, and with the average cost of a claim being £2200, decided something needed to be done to stop the emerging trend.
Sally Wilby, Director here at Caravan Guard, explains the initiative,
“We designed a small sun visor sticker which could be filled in with a motorhomes dimensions to help motorhomers avoid bridges or barriers which were too low to safely drive under. We also found some motorhomers coming unstuck when measurements in Europe were in metric form, so the sticker helped users convert from imperial to metric and list both values.”
Since the scheme launched Caravan Guard have not only seen a 43% decrease in motorhome and American RV insurance claims, but also a 31% decrease in the average cost of a claim compared to 2008. Showing that motorhomers are taking extra care when approaching low bridges.
“We’ve seen very few insurance claims where the policyholder has driven under a bridge that’s too low and caused substantial damage – most claims have been for minor scrapes often caused when moving over to allow other motorists past on the other side. That said, accidents are still happening and we’d like to help all motorhome owners avoid such damage.”
