Last month we asked you to rate yourself for safety consciousness when it comes to touring with your caravan or motorhome.
We had almost 300 votes, and positively 85% of you said you were very or extremely safety conscious. In fact over half of you conduct checks before every journey and almost 30% of you have a routine that means you even make checks mid journey and then inspect your outfit for new problems after completing a journey.
Caravanner Andy Culley had wise words to say:
“It only takes a few moments to run through the various things that need checking. If I have a 1.5 tonne metal box attached to the back of my vehicle it is incumbent on me to make sure it’s as safe as possible. I spent 30 years as a traffic cop so know only too well the grief that is caused when something goes wrong. Five minutes checking, five months regretting is a worthwhile phrase.”
Just 1% of you said you make no checks at all after purchasing your caravan or motorhome.
We’d always recommend having a list of routine checks to complete before every journey to help avoid preventable mishaps.
If you’d like a quick reference list of pre departure checks, why not print out our caravan checklist or motorhome checklist.
The top safety tip we’d give caravanners and motorhome owners would be to always check tyres to ensure correct pressures, and to spot signs of damage such as cracks or bulges, before every journey. The results of tyre blow outs can be extremely devastating, as we know from the value of insurance claims associated with such incidents!
