MOTORHOME
THEFT PREVENTION
Sadly there's been an increase in motorhome thefts, and thieves are becoming more clever in targeting and overcoming a motorhome's standard security devices.
What can you do to protect your motorhome or campervan?
Steering wheel locks
Steering wheel locks are making a comeback. Their visibility and difficulty to remove can be a real turn–off for motorhome thieves. Consider these models:
Other physical security options
Though we're big fans of steering wheel locks due to their high visibility, these devices could also be effective…
Parking at home
Some motorhomes get towed away by thieves!
Parking your motorhome nose first with the wheels turned makes it more difficult to tow.
Posts and barriers
Open driveaway? A drive post could be the deterrent to make thieves look elsewhere for an easier steal. If you have gates, add a lock to make them more secure. Remember that locks need to be in place 24 hours a day.
Storage sites
If you store your motorhome away from home, make sure you check on it regularly. Some storage sites are not monitored 24 hours a day, so they might not notice your motorhome being taken away!
Key protection
Keep your motorhome keys in a safe place, out of sight, and as far away as possible from your motorhome. If you have a motorhome with keyless entry, consider a Faraday Bag or key–shielding pouch too.
OBD protection
OBD (On-Board Diagnostic) ports are like your motorhome's on-board computer. Situated under the dashboard, thieves are known to use it to override vehicle security and start the engine without the key.
Consider an OBD port lock, an OBD blocker, or even moving the OBD port if possible (speak to a specialist) to prevent misuse.
Be vigilant!
Any extra precautions you take might make the difference between your motorhome being stolen or thieves moving on to find an easier target.
