At sixes and heavens!
Welcome to the largest of the Avanté caravan models from Elddis for the 2019 season – unless you want to step up to any of the wide-bodied twin axle variants.
The six-berth, single axle 586 here manages to stay reasonably lightweight – for a sixer – whilst also providing plenty of family-friendly comforts, not least in a washroom that’s been uprated.
It will certainly cater for families of up to six, thanks to a layout that has fixed bunk beds, a side dinette that converts to two more bunks and a typical front lounge of parallel seating, with a central chest of drawers which converts easily enough to a generous 2.08m x 1.30m double bed.
Also up front, you get a typical three-window arrangement with fixed sunroof. All windows have sprung roller blinds and flyscreen fittings. Plus, there are provisions to put your TV on the nearside at the front, or on the unit near the offside settee. The same unit is also home to the main, free-standing table and some shelved storage space.
Interior colourings are a mix of mid-browns, but notable points are its Ozio lightweight cushioning, with Aquaclean upholstery that’s easy to wipe clean – the latter a particularly important factor in a family caravan, surely!
Mid-‘van offside, the dinette-cum-bunk beds is typical, with three lockers overhead.
Directly across from this, the kitchen has a full cooker with dual-fuel hob and separate oven and grill. The sink is right next to the hob, leaving worktop/draining board space to its left. A Russell Hobbs microwave oven is a sensible enough height over the area of permanent worktop (most people find that a more convenient location than, say, directly above the hob).
All kitchen appliances are in black. It’s only a small Dometic fridge, however, which might not find favour with the whole family.
Moving on towards the back, two fixed bunk beds aft of the kitchen look a tad narrow (official measurements are 1.82m x 0.59m, compared to the dinette beds at 1.80m x 0.75m and 1.64m x 0.55m for the lower and upper respectively). Access to the upper fixed bunk is via a metal ladder (those steps might not be too kind to bare feet in the night), with opening windows and reading lights to each bed.
All this leave the washroom to occupy the near offside corner. Here, there’s a Thetford swivel-bowl toilet and a countertop basin.
There’s also space for a plastic-lined shower cubicle with bi-folding door and Ecocamel showerhead. Storage offerings include two double-doored lockers under the basin and over the toilet, plus there’s a window to help with ventilation, and other details include a toilet roll holder and toothbrush mug.
Between the washroom and those bunk beds, a large push-button door opens to reveal a wardrobe with full hanging depth as well as a shelved section – great for the whole family.
Other details of note include positive locks for overhead lockers and standard safety features include Al-Ko’s ATC and AKS hitch stabiliser. Like all Elddis products, it uses SoLiD construction, with aluminium sides and the backing of a ten-year integrity warranty.
Verdict: A relatively frill-free approach to family caravanning
Plus: Al-Ko ATC as standard, lots of bed and sleep spaces
Minus: Small fridge
In-a-nutshell: Six go budget caravanning
