An archetypal German A-class motorhome – from its wordy name to its style, quality and sheer grandeur. But, there’s a difference. Thanks to its BlackLine specification, there’s less need to dip into what can often be a bewildering choice of factory-fit optional extras that are typically on offer with premium products like this, all of which will only have one effect on your wallet.
All five A-class models in the Hymer Blackline series come with everything from a high-spec’ base to fitted bed sheets, 5m awning, extra mains/12V/USB sockets, smart TV and much, much more.
The Hymer B-class ModernComfort I 680 BlackLine motorhome’s base vehicle first. It’s a Mercedes Sprinter with a special lightweight chassis. You get the 170HP (172bhp) engine as standard, along with 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. In the cab, there’s the always impressive MBUX Multimedia system with 10in touchscreen, reversing camera, Voice Control, sat nav and more.
There’s also the Hymer Connect app to give you full remote control of interior lighting, heating and plenty more, all via your smartphone.
This is a motorhome of some heft, literally. Mass in Running Order starts at 3,282kg – but that’s before you add to that already generous specification – because, yes, there’s always the opportunity to add a bit more.
However, it’s worth noting you’ll need C1 status on your driving licence – it allows you to drive vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. Also, such is the weight of this model that there are speed restrictions here in the UK – it’s an anomaly but officially vehicles weighing over 3,050kg unladen must keep to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways (do note this is unladen weight, not Mass in Running Order). On the plus side, there’s well over a tonne of payload to play with. You might want to talk about replating possibilities with your supplying dealer.
What you will be getting, however, is unadulterated luxury that you can glide about in. A Mercedes-based A-class from one of the most iconic producers of motorhomes!
The Hymer B-class ModernComfort I 680 BlackLine motorhome;s bodywork is Hymer’s long-pedigree PUAL bodywork construction techniques, with a double floor construction for extra insulation as well as low-level storage. The metallic silver bodywork is standard, too, as are the alloy wheels, Blackline graphics, skirt lockers etc.
Fresh and waste water tanks of 180 litres and 150 litres respectively are an indicator of the level of duty you’d expect from a motorhome like this. And that garage has massive doors each side, checker-plate flooring, interior shelving and rails on the back wall. Plus an impressive 450kg payload.
It’s a typical four-berth motorhome floorplan, with permanent single beds at the back and a typical A-class manual drop-down double bed in the cab area.
In daytime mode, the seating area has an L-shaped settee, single inward-facing seat and swivelled cab chairs, all around a fixed pedestal leg table.
The L-shaped kitchen is mid-‘van and kit levels are up to UK expectations – the Thetford cooker has three gas rings and a separate oven and grill, and there’s a circular sink with a tiny drainer inset and some, but not a lot, of permanent worktop. Neat touches include the full splash panel, twin mains sockets and inset rail with movable hooks for tea towels etc.
Across the corridor is a 142-litre slimline Thetford fridge with freezer compartment.
Washroom facilities in the Hymer B-class ModernComfort I 680 BlackLine motorhome are split between a plastic-lined shower cubicle on the nearside and a toilet room with a fixed handbasin offside.
The door for the toilet room also doubled up to offer full en suite privacy from the kitchen and lounge, as required.
For sleeping, the manually operated overcab bed pulls down easily enough – mattress dimensions are 1.94m x 1.45m, but it can also be used as two singles, as an option, 1.94m x 0.65m each.
Rear singles are 2.02m x 0.86m and 1.90m x 0.86m, but they can easily go on to make up as a double, thanks to a slide-out central section. Access is via a set of clever folding steps.
There are more options in the Hymer B-class ModernComfort I 680 BlackLine motorhome. Of course there are! This is a Hymer, after all, even if it’s better equipped as standard than many other motorhomes from the same stable. As ever, it’s the “Packages” (see below or opposite for prices, but investigate more yourself) that offer best value.
