Most of these units are very heavy in relation to the fairly meagre Payload allowances provided for most touring caravans. I wouldn’t want to loose 25+ kg of payload and I certainly wouldn’t want to sit it on the roof of the caravan. i suspect that many people won’t even consider the effect of the additional weight on their MTPLM, and, as it not something that can easily be removed, could be a serious issue if VOSA decided to pick the caravan for weight checks.

No mention of the noise level which is very important. We used to have an American RV in the USA and the A/C whilst good was too noisy! In the end we only used it to cool down inside before sleeping. As we boondocked (offgrid) most of the time anyway it would have meant a noisy generator as well.Best solution we had was a Fan-Tastic Vent 01100WH Endless Breeze – 12 Volt Fan still in use in our caravan now 9 years later! We solar panels we also had a 220V large fan on a stand via the inverter. No problems when next to Lake Mead (Las Vegas) for 2 weeks one year and 40C temperatures!

Look at the UK company Totalcool Ltd. They make a 12v/24v/mains portable evaporative cooler the Totalcool 3000. It is fully made in the UK with UK sourced components and has a 2 year guarantee. It can be used in motorhomes caravans, cars houses etc. They also do power packs to operate it off grid and portable freezer fridges. You can order off their website or they have trade stands at all sorts of outdoor shows. I have one and I have been using it in my campervan at the weekend and now in my house to keep my dogs cool ( as well as me)

Interesting, but two of the product reviews state so many watts/so many amps required to operate. You would have to use 500volt supply to only consume said amps????

  5. Pete Murray says:

After travelling to Holland last year when europe was in a massive heat wave (35° plus) I said I wouldn’t go on holiday in the caravan again without air conditioning.
We bought this a few days ago and at £218 uses less than 6amp electric and weights less than 20kg. Perfect size for the caravan and we have been testing in our bedroom at home in the last few days of extreme heat in the UK and works great.
