For a larger-scale automotive player, Moto Trek keeps its light fairly well concealed. Yet, it made its first motorhome back in 2012 and today boasts a portfolio covering van conversions as well as coachbuilts like this. Its parent company is involved in the production of horseboxes, trailers, ambulance and police car work and more, so there’s plenty of automotive expertise at its base in Stocksbridge, near Sheffield.
Keeping it compact
The Xplora FDB motorhome is just 6m long, thereby qualifying for the compact coachbuilt moniker. Yet it packs a lot in, still leaving a fair amount of living space – thanks to a motorhome floorplan with a fixed transverse double bed over a garage storage area at the back.
Mid-van is a larger than average washroom (offside) and a kitchen along the nearside, while at the front there’s a double bench seat that combines with the swivelled cab seats and a free-standing table for what is admittedly a rather tight lounge area.
The tightness of daytime sitting space in the Xplora FDB motorhome is down to a commodious washroom, easily accessed thanks to a full-height tambour door, which slides back.
The other washroom walls are plastic-lined, and there’s a countertop basin, plus a Dometic toilet with ceramic bowl. Details include a soap tray, toothbrush mug and mirror.
The only obvious downsides in here are the lack of a window (so much better for ventilation), the single fixing point for the showerhead (where a riser bar provides more flexibility) and just the one plughole for the shower.
Across from the washroom, the Xplora FDB’s kitchen is comprehensively equipped, starting with a Thetford Triplex cooker with three gas burners and a combined oven and grill.
To its right is a sink, under which is an Isotherm 83-litre compressor fridge, with freezer. Also here is a microwave oven, Power Dock mains sockets and a good range of storage – two overhead lockers, cutlery drawer, tall lockers at each end of the kitchen unit, and more. Worktop space is somewhat limited, however.
At the back, there’s a ladder to hook on for getting up to the 2.01m x 1.22m bed on a solid base. One thing to look out for is the location of the windows at each end of the bed – they’re low, so may impinge on your sleeping position.
Under the bed, the garage isn’t the biggest, but will still prove convenient for handling the types of goods you’d rather not have in the living quarters – folding chairs, outdoor cookers etc.
Throughout the Moto Trek Xplora FDB motorhome, there’s a generous level of standard specification – everything from the habitation door with window to the overcab sunroof, underslung gas tank to roof-mounted 120Watt solar panel – that belies the relative budget pricing of this model.
Other kit includes reversing camera, alloy wheels, TV, twin leisure batteries, Truma Combi 4E heating and hot water system etc. The fresh and waste water tanks are both 75-litres. At nearly £70,000 however, buyers will likely have to invest in additional security devices to obtain insurance cover.
Moto Trek also offers choice with its furniture finishes and upholsteries.
Base vehicle is Peugeot’s Boxer chassis-cab, supplied as standard with the 140bhp engine and six-speed manual transmission. It’s a good match for the relatively small coachbuilt body, giving it decent levels of performance and economy.
A revised model is on the cards for later in the 2024 season, so you might want to wait to see what that brings, although undoubtedly it will also mean a higher price. It might just be worth asking.
Verdict: Touring for two in an all-facilities, convenient size package
Plus: Compact dimensions, large washroom, well equipped for its price
Minus: Lacks a bit in all-round refinement, small lounge
In-a-nutshell: You’ll adore an Xplora
