A caravan’s CRiS number or VIN number is made up of 17 characters and identifies your caravan uniquely.
It stands for Central Registration and Identifcation Scheme number and in this frequently asked question video, Leisure Vehicles Officer Tim Booth, tells us where to find the CRiS number on a caravan, as well as explaining more about VIN Chip.
Pre-2016 model caravans have their CRiS number chemically etched onto the caravan’s side window in a dot matrix format and the same number is also stamped onto the chassis.
From 2016 caravan models, the CRiS number is displayed on a VIN Chip sticker on the inside of the front window and in the front locker. This also includes a QR code, which when scanned on a smart phone, will give you the caravan’s CRiS or VIN number, the make and model and other details about the caravan, such as its weight. There are more details about VIN Chip when you click here.
The CRiS number will also be stamped on to the chassis of the caravan and the two should match.
The number tells the Central Registration Identification Scheme who made the caravan, which country it was made in, and the caravan’s serial number. Registering your caravan’s VIN or CRiS number with CRiS proves you are the registered keeper of the vehicle and acts as a security check when buying a caravan.
It links a caravan to its keeper and also helps the police to prevent and deter caravan theft. Here at Caravan Guard we’ll ask for your tourer’s CRiS or VIN number when providing you with a caravan insurance quote.
