France tops the list of favourite European destinations for motorhomers

France has been crowned the most visited European country by UK motorhome and campervan owners in our latest community poll.

We asked our readers: “Where have you visited in Europe in your motorhome or campervan?” and received almost 800 votes from touring enthusiasts keen to share the countries they’ve explored on their European adventures.

Unsurprisingly, France came out comfortably on top, reflecting its long-standing popularity with UK motorhomers thanks to its excellent campsites, scenic driving routes, motorhome-friendly stopovers and easy access from the UK.

Spain secured second place, with Germany, Belgium and Italy also proving firm favourites among motorhomers touring mainland Europe.

As many respondents had travelled to multiple countries, the results show just how adventurous motorhome owners can be when planning their European road trips.

Why France remains a motorhome favourite

France has long been one of the easiest and most rewarding countries for motorhome touring. From the vineyards of Bordeaux and the beaches of Normandy to the mountain roads of the Alps and the Mediterranean coastline, it offers a huge variety for travellers.

Many motorhomers also appreciate France’s vast network of Aires, making it easy to stop overnight while exploring different regions. Plus, you’ll often have to travel through France from the UK to get to more southerly countries like Spain and Portugal.

Spain and Portugal continue to attract winter sun seekers

Spain’s popularity is likely helped by the growing number of UK motorhomers heading south in search of winter sunshine. The Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and inland regions remain popular with longer-term touring enthusiasts.

Portugal also featured strongly in the poll in eighth place, many visitors combining with trips to Spain for extended European tours. The Netherlands took seventh place.

Touring further across Europe

The results also highlighted how many motorhome owners are travelling further afield. Scandinavian countries such as Sweden and Norway ranked among the top 15, while Croatia and Greece continue to grow in popularity thanks to their stunning coastlines and warmer climates.

A handful of adventurous travellers had even ventured beyond Europe into Morocco, although it’s not a country our motorhome insurance cover extends to.
