In this FAQ video, Richard Moorse from TyrePal explains how a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) works on a car and caravan outfit.
Correctly inflated tyres on both your caravan and tow car are essential for safe towing stability and will reduce the risk of a blow out.
A tyre pressure monitoring system continuously monitors the pressure and temperature of both your caravan and tow car’s tyres when towing.
Sensors are placed on to your caravan and tow car’s tyre valves and then you set the correct tyre pressure on the dashboard monitor. These sensors monitor your tyres’ pressure and temperature every six seconds and if they sense anything is wrong, they’ll send an immediate visual and audible alert to the monitor.
It’s important to always check your caravan and tow car tyres before every trip. Make sure they’re not showing any signs of damage and wear and always make sure they’re correctly inflated, particularly if your caravan has been stood for a while.
Follow the caravan manufacturer’s recommendations where available or TyreSafe has a tyre pressure calculator on their website for caravans and towcars.
Check the age of your caravan tyres and replace any that are more than five years old and always make sure you check the tightness of your caravan’s wheel nuts using a torque wrench.
