There’s a growing trend in the van conversions sector – offering an elevating roof option to an otherwise standard vehicle. Here’s a great example.
Auto-Sleepers announced a whole new line-up when it debuted the Active campervan range for 2026 – three models all taking Fiat’s 6.36m long Ducato as their base and all starting with a £69,749 on-the-road price, to which you can add a further £6,000 if you want the elevating roof with its two extra sleeping berths, as featured here.

Generally the expectation is you’ll also go for the various Pack options, as follows: Comfort (£1,180) – two scatter cushions, cab blinds, sliding door flyscreens, carpet throughout; Premium (£2,000) – alloy wheels, reversing camera, cab air conditioning, cruise control; and Tech (£1,070) – 100Watt rigid solar panel, external gas point, Avtex aerial and Wi-Fi system, 100Ah lithium leisure battery).
The Expedition Grey exterior paintwork you can see here is also a £795 premium over the standard white. At the time of reporting, the Comfort and Tech Packs were being offered at no extra charge.
In this video, we take a walkthrough of the all-new Auto-Sleeper KB 635 Active campervan:
Taking the Kingham from the standard Auto-Sleepers line-up as its blueprint, this Active stablemate sets out to appeal to a younger audience. As with the Kingham, though, key in the Auto-Sleeper Active KB635 floorplan is a lengthways French bed in the rear offside corner.

The twin rear doors still come in handy for access to the toilet cassette locker and the underbed storage area, although you can also hinge the bed up from the inside. There’s plenty of space in here despite the presence of the water heater tank, leisure battery and miscellaneous ducting and wiring etc – at least some of which would look better if it were sectioned off.

One other aspect to note is Auto-Sleepers uses the version of the Fiat Ducato base with pre-fitted tinted glass windows – it certainly makes for a sleeker external look, but most of them don’t open.

Auto-Sleepers helps offset this by having a Midi Heki rooflight to the elevating roof section over the gap for climbing up to the bed, plus there’s a full flyscreen for the sliding door.

The elevating roof is from Italian manufacturer Sky Up. Its shell is black GRP with a polyurethane insulation layer, with a hinge designed to prevent the canvas getting ensnared.

It also features mesh panels to the front and nearside side plus an acrylic window on the offside – all with zipped covers.

Its bed is on a one-piece mattress, 1.94m x 1.34m (that compares with the downstairs bed’s 1.90m x 1.20m maximum dimensions), using a clip-on ladder for access.

Alongside the downstairs double bed, the washroom has a tambour door entrance, with shower, toilet and handbasin facilities. Storage space is almost non-existent. However, just outside the washroom is a vanity unit that also provides plenty of locker space.

Similarly, things are a little cramped in the kitchen area of the Autosleeper Active KB 635 campervan.

You do get a Thetford Triplex cooker with three gas rings and a combined oven and grill, a separate sink and – across the corridor, at the foot of the bed – a low-level Dometic fridge (with wardrobe above and a rather neat pull-out worktop section between them).

The main locker unit under the worktop includes a loose cutlery tray, plus there’s a pull-up tower for a trio of mains sockets, and a wine glass locker!

Throughout the interior of the Active KB 635 campervan, the upholstery is in grey with bright green stitching and the flat fronts to the upper lockers are hints at a more modern approach to the styling.

And fittings like the underfloor 25-litre gas tank and Truma’s CombiNeo heating and hot water system, with its promise of an endless supply of the latter, keep up the more contemporary appeal.

Plus, that reversing camera and parking sensors should help keep knocks to a minimum, and combined with the Sargent S7 tracking device fitted as standard, will attract some savings on your campervan insurance.
