POLL NOW CLOSED – Thanks to everyone who voted
Caravanning is all about relaxing and enjoying your time away, and a few simple safety checks can make a big difference in keeping trips trouble-free.
That’s why in this month’s poll we’re asking if you regularly test the fire safety gear in your caravan.
Why caravan fire and gas safety checks matter
Thankfully, caravan fires are relatively rare, but when they do happen, they can be devastating. Fire-related incidents have featured among the most costly caravan insurance claims, often resulting in significant damage or even write-offs. The good news is that many risks can be reduced with a few simple checks and good habits.
What should you be checking?
Regular caravan fire safety checks don’t take long, but they’re essential for peace of mind:
- Smoke alarms – test regularly and replace batteries as needed
- Carbon monoxide alarms – especially important when using gas appliances, and like smoke alarms, test regularly and replace batteries at the start of the season
- Gas hoses and connections – check for cracks, wear or loose fittings. Gas cylinder hoses should generally be replaced every five years from the date of manufacture.
- Ventilation – make sure air vents aren’t blocked
- Fire extinguishers and blankets – make sure they’re in date and easy to access
If you’re unsure what to look for, take a look at our Guide to caravan and motorhome fire safety gear, which covers the essential equipment every touring caravan should carry.
Taking a few minutes to test alarms or inspect gas equipment could prevent a much bigger issue later on. It’s a small part of your pre-trip routine that can make a big difference.
Vote in our new poll and let us know how often you carry out your fire and gas safety checks. And, as always, feel free to share your own tips or routines in the comments.
