Can you believe the Südwind name first appeared on a caravan from Germany’s Knaus some 60 years ago? As part of the 2026 celebrations, four models from the 16-strong Südwind line-up have the higher specification Black Selection treatment, including the flagship 580 QS under review here.
In this video, we take a look around the Knaus Südwind 580 QS Black Selection caravan:
The external appearance of this wide-bodied tourer immediately suggests something different. It’s rare to see a premium caravan with just a single front window, for example. Note also the ServiceBox – a single locker that includes mains inlet, access to the fresh water tank etc. But go inside (the entrance door remains on the UK offside of this import, but it’s wider than typical) and all is explained.
It may be a very unusual caravan layout for the UK (none of our home-grown manufacturers produce anything like it), but it’s popular enough with larger families throughout Europe.

That front end is a permanent transverse double bed (which helps explain the single window), while the main lounge – a double dinette with sculpted seating and a shaped table – is on the nearside in the centre of the ‘van.

That 2.06m x 1.46m (maximum width) French bed is arguably the best choice for parents who want to sleep together – especially as it has a superior quality, breathable foam EvoPore mattress – but the lounge can also be converted to a bed (it’s 2.14m x 1.12m), while two fixed bunks (which also boast EvoPore mattresses) sit along the rear nearside corner – they’re 1.90m x 0.70m and 1.90m x 0.74m.

If you go for the triple bunk option, as featured here, it also includes an extra window as well as being able to fold-up the lower bunk to give a large storage area when not needed for sleeping.

The Südwind 580 QS’s kitchen is directly opposite the lounge area. It includes a hob with three gas rings in a line alongside a separate circular sink, which still leaves a bit of permanent worktop space. The worktop extension to the left is an optional extra.

Storage includes two upper lockers (the one on the right is shelved) as well as lower-level lockers and drawers. There’s also a spice rack.

UK versions of the Knaus Südwind 580 QS get a Thetford SOV42 oven/grill with side-opening door, but its location, under the cutlery drawer, doesn’t make it the most convenient.
The fridge/freezer is also from Thetford – a 142-litre model with bottle drawer in its base and automatic energy selection. To its right, a tall, shelved locker will surely take all the food you’re going to want to carry with you. Or you might want to put your clothes in here.

That leaves sufficient space for a washroom that includes a separate shower cubicle with folding doors as well as a Dometic swivel-bowl toilet and a fixed corner basin.

There’s a window in here as well has practical details like the drop-down clothes hanging rail, an upper mirror doored cabinet with open shelving either side, more shelving behind the toilet, hooks and more.

There’s plenty more of note throughout the rest of the living and sleeping areas of the Knaus Südwind 580 QS caravan. Floor carpets are standard. Reading lights are on stems with USB portals. Knaus’ Bluetooth sounds system is here. There are upper lockers throughout, all with soft-close.

There’s also loads of storage space in the base of the front bed. And there’s a wardrobe. It sits over – and benefits from the heat of – a somewhat traditional Truma S 5004 space heater which, in turn, is complemented by a Truma Ultraheat boiler for hot water.
Such is the otherwise premium nature of this caravan, you’d probably expect Alde’s wet central heating system. But that only makes it as far as a somewhat comprehensive options list.
