A motorhome reversing camera will certainly help with an extra eye when backing up your motorhome and last month we sought to find out how many owners had one fitted.

After more than 500 votes, almost 90 percent of voters said they had a motorhome reversing camera fitted to their vehicle. Did you know you can get a discount on your motorhome insurance policy for these safety devices?
More than half of voters (53 percent) said they had a factory fitted camera on their motorhome and just over a third (36 percent) told us they had an aftermarket reversing camera.
Just six percent of the 535 motorhomers who voted said they were considering buying one and only five percent said they had no plans to buy a camera.

Neal Farrow has had a reversing camera for more than 19 years and said it has definitely saved a number of potential bumps.
“I have a tilting lens reversing camera, the third motorhome to have a camera fitted, and I believe they are a definite boon,” said Neal. “The lens tilts downwards electrically when reverse is selected but this angle gives a much shorter, restricted view in the monitor. When I eventually get some time I will cut the wire to the reversing light circuit so that the lens continues to give the “long view” which is much safer.”
One owner said reversing cameras work well but can be an issue when you have bikes mounted on a bike rack, and especially if you have a cover on your bikes.
“Manufacturers really need to think about implementing the reversing camera on an extending arm or on the bike rack itself to avoid these issues,” they commented.
A few owners also highlighted issues with sunlight, rain, and nightime driving affecting the performance of some reversing cameras.
“Factory fitted camera fairly useless in sunlight, rain or at night,” said Kes. “We have an omnivue system which was necessary because of the bike rack – marvellous. Also use it as a rearview mirror whilst driving. Useful when turning left as shows any cyclists creeping up. No problems at all with fogging and great to reverse in tight spaces as we can see both front corners too.”
Stephen Marris has factory fitted rear view camera fitted to his Bailey Autograph 79-4.
“The screen is on the dashboard to the left of the speed and engine revs dials so it is easily seen by the driver. It’s active all the time when driving and the view reverses when the gearstick is put into reverse,” he said. “Thoroughly recommend you get one fitted if you don’t have one.”
Harry said motorhome manufacturers were a good few years behind car manufacturers, some who have systems offering 360° vision.
“As others have said a second pair of eyes is (usually) in my opinion, the best solution,” he added.

One of the first gadgets I fitted when we bought our 2002 motorhome and they are a definite boon. The system has two cameras one for long distance that works like a rear view mirror and one pointing down for when you are backinp up. Which one is displayed is selected from a button on the viewer that is clipped to the rear view.mirror. Works very well but as other have said the long distance camera is less effective at night and in wet conditions. Also when bikes are on the back the one pointing down is less useful.
Cameras are good, But the comment regarding when bikes are fitted (if only a single lense camera) is so spot on. Because of this I fitted a very small additional camera just above the number plate which gives a great view. Luckily I found the spare input to the cab viewer that was under the passenger front seat. (Roller Team on a Ford base). Having said all that I do get “her indoors” to get out. We use two radios which are brilliant – I would highly recommend these as it saves silly hand signals that you struggle to see.
Excellent! I have a two view camera. Rear view not so good in the dark and rain, and the reserving camera doesn’t fully span the width of the vehicle. Never the less, wouldn’t be without it!!
