A brand-new campervan brand has arrived on the UK leisure vehicle scene. ATOM Motorhomes, created by Trigano Group, is taking a fresh approach to campervan ownership with a range of Volkswagen Crafter-based campervans that are sold directly to customers online rather than through a traditional dealer network.
According to ATOM, the new range has been designed to offer buyers more choice, flexibility and personalisation from the moment they place an order.
Four models at launch
The initial range comprises four two-berth campervans, all based on the Volkswagen Crafter and built by Auto-Trail at its Grimsby factory:
- ATOM Core 600B
- ATOM Core 600G
- ATOM Element 600B
- ATOM Element 600G
All four models measure 5.99m in length and 2.04m in width, while retaining a licence-friendly 3,500kg weight, making them suitable for drivers with a standard Category B licence.
Two layouts to suit different adventures
ATOM is keeping things simple at launch with two distinct layouts.
ATOM 600B: Flexible rear lounge
The 600B features a classic rear lounge arrangement with parallel bench seats, creating a spacious area for relaxing during the day. At night, these convert into two single beds measuring 1.88m x 0.66m. This layout will appeal to couples who enjoy a roomy living area and tend to travel with less outdoor equipment.
ATOM 600G: Fixed beds and a large garage
For those carrying bikes, outdoor gear or bulky equipment, the 600G swaps the rear lounge for two fixed single beds at the back. Measuring 1.88m x 0.65m, the beds sit above a sizeable garage space, offering practical storage without compromising on sleeping comfort.
A campervan that’s truly yours
One of the most interesting aspects of the ATOM concept is its emphasis on customisation. Rather than selecting from pre-configured dealer stock, buyers can build their campervan online and personalise it to their tastes. There are:
- 10 exterior paint colours, with some as optional extras
- Six upholstery choices
- Two locker door finishes (Taupe or Caramel)
- A range of optional extras such as 8-speed automatic transmission, heated windscreen, 17″ alloy wheels, Thule bike rack and more
The result is a campervan that feels far more individual than many factory-built rivals and, as ATOM put it – “is led by the customer”.
Core versus Element
The Core models are the foundation of the range and come equipped with a good level of specification. For those who enjoy extended off-grid adventures and want an enhanced specification, the Element versions adds several desirable upgrades.
ATOM Element highlights
The higher-spec Element models include:
- Roof rack with integrated awning, telescopic ladder and 200W Renogy ShadowFlux solar panel
- Exterior BBQ point
- Garage light with magnetic mount on the Element 600G
- 340Ah lithium leisure battery and loom
- 3,000W inverter
- 16″ alloy wheels with front and rear mud flaps
- Rear view camera
- 5G ready motorhome wi-fi
ATOM says it’s targeting buyers looking for a premium Volkswagen-based campervan without the premium price tag often associated with the badge. The direct-sales model also gives customers more visibility throughout the build process and potentially greater control over the final specification.
ATOM customers will be able to follow the progress of their vehicle from order through production.
Good news for campervan insurance
Security and driver-assistance technology don’t just make campervanning and motorhoming easier, they can also attract insurance discounts.
Features fitted to the ATOM range that may qualify for Caravan Guard insurance discounts include:
- Front and rear parking sensors
- Reversing camera
- Thatcham S5 tracking device
These features can help reduce the risk of accidental damage and improve the chances of a vehicle being recovered in the event of theft.
The UK campervan market is highly competitive, but ATOM enters with the backing of the Trigano Group and manufacturing expertise from Auto-Trail. Combine that with the popularity of the Volkswagen Crafter base vehicle, a long list of standard equipment and extensive personalisation options, and the new brand could prove an attractive proposition for buyers seeking something a little different.
The on the road starting price of the ATOM Core 600B campervan is £62,600, and the Element 600G has a starting price of £68,260.
With four thoughtfully designed two-berth models available from launch and more layouts expected in future, ATOM is certainly a newcomer worth keeping an eye on.
