Proven qualities underlie every Warwick XL campervan from Auto-Sleepers.

No change for change’s sake

It’s a model that was introduced back in 2013, as a longer version of the original Warwick (now called the Warwick Duo) but has remained pretty much unchanged since. Which rather suggests – especially if sales are anything to go by – that Auto-Sleepers got things right, right from the start.

That’s especially true of the floorplan. It’s the always popular twin rear settees with washroom and kitchen mid-‘van formula – and it’s fair to say the Warwick XL is not without rivals.

At 6.36m, this van conversion is longer than many coachbuilts. Peugeot’s Boxer has always been the base vehicle, although Auto-Sleepers can now accommodate those who want automatic transmission by switching to the almost identical Fiat Ducato. However, at the time of writing you’ll probably have more luck ordering a Peugeot-based Warwick than one on a Fiat.

In Peugeot format, you get the latest powerful, torquey 165bhp engine that has the best possible Euro 6.3 emissions rating. Auto-Sleepers also orders its bases with an extra leaf spring for each rear wheel – something that goes a long way to alleviating the bounciness felt by motorhomes using Peugeot’s Boxer (and indeed Fiat’s Ducato). A semi-air suspension set-up also adds an extra layer of ride comfort. This is part of the Premium Pack, an option that nominally adds £2,500 to the start price. However, as Auto-Sleepers is yet to sell a Warwick XL without this option, we’ve included it in our price here.

It’s hardly surprising, because Premium add-ons extend to cab air conditioning, a wind-out awning, alloy wheels, solar panel, and a Zenec infotainment system with DAB, satnav and colour reversing camera, and more.

Frankly, you might as well also add the £295 Winter Pack (cab blinds in lieu of curtains, plus water tank heaters, insulated rear wheel arches etc) whilst you’re about to sign up.

This has always been an exceedingly well-equipped van conversion. Latest models go even further, with items such as Motorhome Wifi and an Avtex 19in TV. A Sargent tracking system with a S7 Thatcham rating will give you peace of mind and a discount on your campervan insurance with Caravan Guard.

Nowadays, too, the Auto-Sleeper Warwick XL relies on Whale systems for its heating and hot water. Quietly efficient, one big advantage here is the underfloor fitting for the blown air heater, which frees up valuable storage space inside. Ditto the 25-litre gas tank fitted to the underside.

Those settees use Reflex foam, which is great for support and long-term durability, but can seem a little harsh for sleeping on (consider mattress toppers if you feel the same).

They’re easy enough to make into beds measuring some 1.97m x 0.70m each. Or you can extend the bases inwards to create a transverse double.

Windows to all three sides here are fixed (again, Auto-Sleepers is unique in using the windowed version of Peugeot’s Boxer), although they are tinted to provide UV protection. There’s a large, opening sunroof overhead and – during the day, at least – there’s the facility to open the rear doors.

An exceedingly well-equipped kitchen extends along the nearside of the Auto-Sleeper Warwick XL. It includes a three-ring Thetford Triplex cooker with combined oven and grill, plus a Dometic microwave oven and an extractor unit.

The sink, with add-on drainer, is immediately left of the cooker, leaving permanent worktop space to its left, under which sits a 96-litre fridge with automatic energy selection.

There’s also a worktop extension that opens up partway across the side doorway. Details like the kitchen roll holder and cutlery holder help make this an excellent food preparation and storage area by campervan and van conversion standards.

Directly across the corridor from the kitchen, the washroom is spacious enough to be able to offer a separate shower area, where you’ll also find a fixed basin. Downsides? At 69 and 40 litres, the fresh and waste water tanks respectively aren’t especially large.

As with all Auto-Sleeper van conversions (eight models for 2023), there’s a considerable choice of exterior colours as well as soft furnishings finishes.

Another reason to buy? Auto-Sleepers, and especially its more popular models, like the Warwick XL, have always enjoyed strong residual values.
