You might just get more than you bargained for with Auto-Trail’s Expedition 68XL campervan. That’s thanks to some interesting upgrades to what starts off as a relatively typical interior layout offering safe travel for up to four and sleeping accommodation for two.

But, if you need full four-berth status, you can go for the elevating roof option you can see here. This gives you an extra 2m x 1.3m double bed.

In this video, we take a look at the all-new Auto-Trail Expedition 68XL campervan:
Base vehicle is Fiat’s near-ubiquitous Ducato – the 6.36m long version behind the standard bearer for this type of van conversion from a number of manufacturers.

White is the standard body colour, with the option of Artense Grey. There are engine choices, too – right up to £6,600 if you want 180bhp power and eight-speed automatic transmission.

As we’re talking factory-fit options – of which there are a fair few – it’s worth noting a reversing camera is an extra £199, but that’s only after you’ve ordered the Pioneer 9in touchscreen infotainment unit upgrade. And it will attract a campervan insurance discount with Caravan Guard.

As standard, though, the Expedition 68XL campervan sleeps two lengthways on its permanent double bed at the back, albeit only one side is the maximum 1.93m long.

That leaves a front seating area comprising the usual swivel cab seats and forward-facing bench arrangement – with a side table that’s hinged – that’s so typical of a Ducato-based van conversion. Note also the top-of-the-range 68XL Flex sister model also gives you a drop-down bed at the back with daytime seating.

Another neat offering (again, shown here) is a choice of single or double slide-out trays under the bed and accessible via the rear doors. Primarily, these are for bike-carrying duties, giving more secure storage for items that you’d rather not leave on show on a typical bike rack. They have load limits of 50kg each.

Also as you’d expect in this class of campervan, the kitchen extends along the nearside just inside the sliding door, with a combination unit offering two gas burners and a sink, complete with a combined oven and grill underneath.

There’s also an 84-litre compressor fridge with freezer from Thetford, set high over drawers and a locker for easy access.

Kitchen storage in the Auto-Trail Expedition 68XL campervan also includes a drawer with cutlery tray under the sink, a (relatively) large double-doored locker and a floor locker beneath the oven. There’s also a single mains socket and worktop extension.

Over on the offside, an unusual feature of the washroom is it has a bench toilet rather than the more usual swivel-bowl version. However, the former certainly has advantages in terms of ease of cleaning around it etc.

Also in here is a trigger-operated shower that extends from the handbasin’s mixer tap.

Storage is a bit limited but includes black metal racking, and the main walls of the washroom are plastic-lined, plus there’s a curtain for showering.
The washroom window is another option well worth considering (although it’s standard if you’re having the elevating roof).

Also among the standard fittings are such desirables as a 200Watt solar panel, along with practicalities like the 70Ah AGM leisure battery, Whale heating and hot water systems, reading lights on stalks with USB portals and 65-litre fresh and waste water tanks.

Details include the towel holder and hook on the back of the washroom door, concertina blinds and flyscreens to all windows aft of the cab and more, right through to a branded umbrella.
It’s all backed by class-leading five-year conversion warranties covering bodywork and conversion – and that’s no matter what you decide you want as your final format.
