Poll results reveal how UK tourers power their getaways
When it comes to touring caravans, everyone has their own favourite way to hook up…or not! Some caravanners like the comfort of an electric hook‑up (EHU), while others prefer the freedom of heading off-grid.
To find out what really powers your adventures, we asked our community how they usually tour, with the results showing a clear winner.
Most caravanners still love to hook up
Our poll revealed that 67% of caravanners always choose an electric hook‑up. So for most tourers, plugging in is still the preferred way to stay warm, comfortable and fully powered on site.

Many owners enjoy the reliability of EHU for heating, lighting and everyday appliances like kettles, microwaves and other cooker alternatives, like air fryers. It’s also the easier option on longer stays or during colder months, where comfort and convenience are top priorities.
But not every caravanner wants to stay plugged in…
While hook‑up came out on top, 14% of respondents said they mix it up, enjoying both electric hook-up and off‑grid adventures.
Meanwhile, 10% prefer to go mostly off grid, showing there’s a growing appetite for quieter, simpler, and more flexible caravanning.
And 9% haven’t tried off‑grid caravanning yet. Perhaps they’re waiting for the right caravan, a confidence boost, or a weather window!
Off‑grid stays can be cheaper, offer more peaceful locations, and allow caravanners to roam beyond busy campsites. With the right energy supply and onboard facilities, going unplugged can still be a great way to enjoy your freedom.
Your off-grid comments
Two caravanners shared their off‑grid setups, and they’re seriously impressive!
Steve Edwards has built a highly capable dual‑battery system with solar, split banks and an inverter setup that powers kettles, an air fryer and even an ice maker. He explains that good planning and load‑shedding are vital, but on a sunny day, the system “recovers very well.”
A brilliant example of how off‑grid touring can still feel luxurious with the right gear.
Brian Reed keeps it simple with two batteries and a solar panel for each. Most of the time, it gives him all the flexibility he needs, and he loves the freedom and lower cost of off‑grid pitches.
