New motorhome security discounts

Here at Caravan Guard, we’ve introduced new discounts for fitting physical security devices so security-conscious motorhome or campervan owners can save even more on their insurance.

For owners who invest in extra physical security devices to reduce the risk of theft, Caravan Guard is offering up to 5% in new discounts*.

Motorhome owners can now get a 5% discount by fitting an approved motorhome steering wheel lock to their pride and joy.

Other physical security devices, such as a pedal lock or box, motorhome wheel clamp, a security chain, extra door locks, removable steering wheel or handbrake lock will also benefit from a 2.5% discount.

This is on top of generous electronic security discounts to policyholders who have a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm or an approved tracking device, which could already save up to 25% on a motorhome insurance policy.

Plus, reversing cameras and sensors will now get a 5% discount.

We take a look at physical security products** in more detail:

A motorhome steering wheel lock is a highly visible deterrent to make a thief think twice about breaking into your motorhome. Some locks wrap around the steering wheel and others go through it and lock into place to prevent the steering wheel from being turned. They’re easy to fit but can be difficult to remove.

Steering wheel devices awarded the discount are the Milenco Commercial high security, Disklok and the Stoplock Pro Elite.

But what about the security devices that can get you a 2.5% discount? Get your discount for one of these:

A pedal lock or box fits over the clutch and brake pedals, locking them into place. There are also pedal locks or boxes for motorhomes with automatic transmission, which lock or encase the brake pedal to prevent use.

When using a pedal lock, it’s a good idea to leave the vehicle in gear to prevent the vehicle from being freewheeled away.

A good quality motorhome wheel clamp or lock will prevent your wheels from turning. Wheel clamps should cover all or part of the wheel nuts and wrap around the tyre in some way. Look for devices which have the Sold Secure logo.

A security chain can be wrapped around the motorhome’s axle and secured to a ground anchor with a strong padlock to help prevent your motorhome from being driven away.

Door locks are an extra line of defence on both the cab or habitation doors as well as any external lockers and garages.

These usually cover the existing habitation lock or the door frame to prevent it from being opened.

Some designs have a lockable handle or have an extra cover to go over the door lock.

Door locks for the cab can be mounted on the outside or inside of the driver’s door.

A removable steering wheel will prevent a motorhome from being driven away by a thief!

Another good visible deterrent is a handbrake lock. This secures the motorhome gear stick to the handbrake to prevent the gears from being changed and the handbrake being released. They usually come in a bright visible colour.

“We feel these new discounts will reward the security conscious motorhome owner and give those customers a better deal on their motorhome insurance policy,” said Caravan Guard’s Director of Relations, Neil Menzies. “Many of these devices and products will add an extra layer of security, be a greater theft deterrent and will all slow down a potential thief to hopefully make them move on to an easier target.”
